Define and explain what an independent clause is as well as a dependent clause. Then explain what a simple sentence is and show examples. Next, explain compound sentences and share examples. Students then practice combining two simple sentences to create a compound sentence. After this, they will drag the correct conjunction to fill in the blanks in the sentences. Then explain what complex sentences are and show an example. Students again practice combining the same two simple sentences from before to create a complex sentence this time. They will then drag the most appropriate subordinating conjunctions into complex sentences. Finally, teach students about compound-complex sentences and have them combine 3 simple sentences into a compound-complex sentence. Again, drag the conjunctions that would make the most sense to fill in the blanks in the sentences. Finally, have students practice identifying the different sentence types.
