End punctuation helps us organize our writing. Without periods, exclamation marks, and question marks, reading a book would be quite the challenge.
End punctuation also helps us understand tone better. A period may not tell us much, but an exclamation point helps emphasize a point or convey excitement, while a question mark conveys uncertainty. End punctuation is a foundational skill in teaching young students.

Learning objective
Students will be able to recognize, name, and use end punctuation.
Introduction
Students will read three sentences with expression. Each sentence will have different end punctuation, including periods, question marks, and exclamation points.
Instruction
The lesson will go over end punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark), the special marks to show that a sentence or full thought has ended. Students will sort the punctuation marks to their designated boxes. They will read three sentences and match the punctuation marks to their purposes. They will read several sentences and fill in the blank at the end of each sentence with appropriate punctuation. Next, they will read a sentence and choose between 2 given punctuation marks to drag and place at the end of the sentence.
Quiz
The students are given 10 questions which ask in which context we use a period, exclamation point, or question mark, then students are given sentences and they must identify the correct end punctuation to use.
Closing
Have students recall when to use periods, question marks, and exclamation marks. Read a story about Christmas Eve and fill in the appropriate punctuation.
