General
Students will practice spelling common abbreviations. They will learn that they are a shortcut when writing. They will be instructed on the capitalization and punctuation rules as they relate to abbreviations.

Introduction
The students will engage in a discussion of when they have used shortcuts. They will share why shortcuts are useful as well when you would use them.

Instruction
The lesson begins with basic rules for writing abbreviations. This includes starting with a capital letter and ending with a period. The lesson continues with learning abbreviations for people such as Mr., Mrs., and Ms. The next group of abbreviations they are instructed on are the days of the week and the months of the year. Skill-building exercises include writing these abbreviations and matching activities. They will also complete sentences with picture clues to practice the months of the year. Continuing on, students learn the rules for the abbreviations of the states. These include how to capitalize them as well as some rules for spelling them. The lesson also contains a proofreading paragraph that has errors pertaining to all of the types of abbreviations discussed in the lesson.

Closing
Students will identify abbreviations that are spelled correctly in a self-checking activity.
