Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Mixtures

In this lesson, your students will review what they have learned so far about the three states of matter.
They will read about combining these states of matter which can form mixtures. The lesson continues with learning that mixtures can be divided into two categories: homogeneous & heterogeneous. The class will view a comparison chart regarding homogeneous vs heterogeneous mixtures, as well as learn to categorize different mixtures.

Learning Objective

Students will be able to describe and identify the appearance and uses of homogenous and heterogenous mixtures.

Introduction

Introduce this lesson with an attention-grabbing image of a delicious Oreo milkshake. Relate this to the lesson by explaining the is a great example of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. The class will review what they have learned so far about the three states of matter. Next, the class will engage in a quick memory refresher activity by putting objects in the correct category. Students will learn about how combining states of matter can form new mixtures. They will engage in a group discussion activity to think of other mixtures that they know from their everyday lives.

Instruction

Explain that mixtures can be divided into two categories: homogeneous & heterogeneous. Students will learn the properties of each category. Common methods of mixture separation will be explained. A comparison chart of Homogeneous vs Heterogeneous Mixtures will be examined. This will be followed by an interactive activity of sliding each mixture to the correct category. A summary of what was learned during the lesson is given at this point.
