Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.6.5c

Learning objective

Students will be able to distinguish among the connotations of words with similar denotations.

Introduction

Students will be introduced to the definitions of denotation and connotation, as well as how to remember them.

Instruction

Students will go over the difference between denotation and connotation with the example of "house" vs. "home." They will look at three elements of connotative meaning: shades of meaning, positive or negative associations, and personal interpretation. Next, students will write about the denotation and connotation of the word, "gray." They will then think of words that have both positive and negative connotations. They will read sentences and choose the word with the more positive connotation, then they will do the same with negative connotations. Students will consider the connotation of the word, "mustang," and why it was chosen to name a car model. Then, they will think of two car names and talk about the denotations and connotations of those words. Students will also consider the emotional sides of words.

Quiz

Students will review denotations and connotations with 10 questions.

Closing

Have students recall what they learned in this lesson. Lastly, they will complete an activity where they pick which word they would rather be described as (e.g., "conceited OR self-confident" and write why.
