In this lesson, students learn what led to the fall of the Byzantine Empire and the start of the Ottoman. Review the roles of Justinian and his wife, Theodora. Have students recall what they learned. Then have students observe the two pictures of people praying and discuss the similarities and differences.
Instruction
Begin by telling students about the Great Schism and explain the importance of icons. Describe the religious beliefs of the western Roman empire and the east, then use a Venn Diagram to compare the two. Have students drag the statements to the correct place on the Venn Diagram. After this, discuss the rise of Islam and the other factors that led to the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453. Next, go over the legacy of the Byzantine Empire and its impact in the world today, in our culture, art, cities, architecture, religion, and law.
