General

In this lesson, students will learn how to decode single-syllable words.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2b

Learning objective

Students will be able to orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds.

Introduction

Students will review long and short vowel sounds.

Instruction

Students will learn how to blend words by putting their fingers on each of the letters and saying each sound.

As a class, students will practice putting their fingers on the first letter, saying the sound then moving on to the next letter. Students will work with a partner to blend words. They will then blend the word then match it to the picture. Students will look at a picture and write in the missing blends for the word. They will sound out a word then draw a line to match it to a picture. Students will look at a picture then say what it is, then write the blend for that sound. They will draw a line from the blend it begins with to the picture. Students will say the name of the picture then circle the letters that make the beginning sound. Students will fill in the correct consonant blends for the beginning or the end of a word/picture.

Quiz

Students are given ten questions in which they review how to blend single-syllable words.

Closing

Students will categorize blended words by dragging them to the real words or nonsense words box.
