Students will be introduced to the story of Ruby Bridges. The lesson will include a brief overview of the historical events that led to her integration into the public school system in the 1960s. The focus of the lesson will be to encourage students to reflect on what impact integrating into a public school had on Ruby, as a reminder for them to practice kindness and empathy with others.

Introduction
Students will reflect on how they felt on their first day of school this year. They will then talk about Ruby Bridges’s first day of first grade.

Instruction
Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark case that ruled segregation in public schools as unconstitutional. Students will discuss reactions to the changes that followed. Students will learn about Ruby’s experiences going to a once segregated White school.
