In this lesson, students will learn how text and illustrations work together to give information. They will use them to describe the key ideas in activities, including reading passages and answering questions about what they learned from the pictures and text.

Learning objective

Students will be able to use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

Introduction

Students will look at a photograph and read a short caption about a ladybug, and answer questions. Introduce these steps to describe key ideas: look at the picture, read the text, and look at what is similar between the picture and the text. Explain why it is important to use pictures and text to find key details.

Instruction

Students will read a passage titled, "How to Decorate a Christmas Tree," and answer questions about what they noticed about the pictures and text. Next, they will match illustrations to their descriptions. They will read other passages titled, "My Birthday Party," "Butterfly Life Cycle," "Tree Frogs," and more, and answer questions about what they learned from them.

Quiz

Students will respond to ten questions which ask students to look at illustrations and texts and find information from both sources.

Students will work in pairs to think of text that matches the pictures. Lastly, they will use the spinner to decide the question they answer about a passage titled, "Seasons."
