Two practice identifying these essential details, students are given short prompts with the task of pulling out the six core details.

Standards
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1

Learning Objective
Students will be able to identify and answer the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a text.

Introduction
Students will look at a picture of kids playing outside and answer the questions: "Who is in the picture? What are they doing? Where are they? When is this happening?" Explain why asking the 5Ws and How about a text can help students understand the text better.

Instruction
Show students the questions they can ask while reading: "Who, What, When, Where, Why, How?"

Students will read (or listen to their teacher read) a passage about a pet adoption day. They will answer Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How questions about. Next, they will read a passage about a school spelling bee and highlight parts of the passage that answer questions. They will then complete sentences that answer the 5Ws and How. They will also answer the questions for a passage about a recital practice.

Quiz
Students are given multiple sentences with one word bolded. Students are asked to identify which of the core six details the word describes.

Closing
The closing activity asks students to pick a very popular story, such as the Three Little Pigs or Hansel & Gretel, and identify the 5 W's and how of that story!
