General

In this lesson, students learn where different kinds of animals live. They will differentiate between water and land animals as well as animals found in deserts and even your own backyard!

Standards

NGSS:
K-LS1-1

Learning Objective

Students will be able to identify the homes of different kinds of animals and explain why they live there.

Introduction

To begin, explain what a habitat is and that plants and animals have homes. Show some examples of animal homes like the forest, the ocean, the desert, a beehive, and a pond. See if students can name some animals that live in these habitats. Then students name 3 animals and think about where those animals might live.

Instruction

Explain that animals are found in every part of the world. They have to live in places where they can survive and get the food they need to live. Show some examples of water animals and explain that many have gills to help them breathe underwater. Have students decide whether an animal, like a seahorse, lives in water or on land. Next, look at the picture of the animals in the tree. Students will circle any animals in the picture that do not belong. For example, a cat does not live in trees. After this, go over desert animals and share some examples. Then have students list some animals they know live on a farm. Students will then draw a line to match the animal to its home. Finally, use the eraser tool to reveal animals you might see in your backyard.

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions. They will be shown pictures of animals and decide which animal lives in water, land, or other habitats.

Closing

Students think of an animal and draw a picture of where they think that animal lives. There is a printable worksheet for this activity.

Instruction materials

The lesson includes an optional printable worksheet for the closing activity.
