In this lesson, students will use their prior knowledge of pronouns to decide when to use pronouns. Pronouns should make writing and speech less repetitive and long, but they sometimes are necessary to keep things clear. Students will read passages and decide which nouns should be switched to pronouns and which should not.

Learning objective
Students will be able to use pronouns effectively to make their writing more fluid.
Introduction
Students will try to write a sentence with only two words. They will identify the parts of speech for each word. Next, they will try to write a sentence with three nouns in it. They'll look at an example, "Karim surfs the waves to the shore." Student will then play a game placing targets on nouns in sentences. They can compete to beat another student's time. Students will see why it is important to use pronouns with the pronoun machine.
Instruction
Students will review four kinds of pronouns: personal pronouns, indefinite pronouns, possessive pronouns, and reflexive pronouns. They will do a short review activity for each kind. They will then read a sentence full of pronouns, "They snuck through theirs with him to find something." They will discuss when they think pronouns should be used and when they should be avoided.
They will read a passage about Evangelina and Maximiliano at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and replace select words with pronouns. They will check their work and discuss with a neighbor if any words made more sense before they were changed to pronouns.

Students will review when to use pronouns in sentences with 10 questions.
Closing
Have students recall why it is important to use pronouns and how to decide when to use a pronoun. Students will then watch a video about Mount Kilimanjaro and discuss what they would see if they took a class trip to climb Kilimanjaro. Compile a class list from of nouns from the discussion. Students will then work together to decide which nouns should be replaced with pronouns.
