Learning objective

Students will be able to answer questions about words using a glossary.

Students will look at a picture of a butterfly and discuss what they can learn about the butterfly from the picture. Explain why it is important to learn unknown words that they may come across while reading and how a glossary can help.

Students will be introduced to types of glossaries. The first one is the picture glossary. Students will read sentences about the picture of a flag and fill in the blanks. Explain that glossary entries may also include a meaning, or definition. Students will look at examples with "tooth" and "penguin."

Words in a glossary are organized in alphabetical order. Students will practice putting letters in order. They will also practice putting words in alphabetical order.

Next, students will look at a glossary entry for "moon" that includes a picture and a definition, and answer questions. They will do the same with the glossary entry for "leaves." Students will drag the definitions to their corresponding words. They will also find the pictures that go with each definition.

Explain that glossary entries can include page numbers to help readers find the page(s) where the word is used. In addition to this, highlighted words are often found in the glossary. Students will read an excerpt about a caterpillar that includes the highlighted words, "larva," and "pupa." Students will use the glossary entries for those words to help them understand what they read. They will do the same for an excerpt about temperature.

Students will answer 4 true/false and 6 multiple-choice questions.

Students will review what they learned in the lesson. Lastly, they will participate in a glossary scavenger hunt using a book in the classroom.
