General

Students will refresh their memories of seasons and be introduced to the summer season. They will read some information about the season and learn about different animals and activities to do in the summer. Students also discuss their favorite summer activities. They will also learn about holidays that take place in the summer and appropriate clothing for summertime.

Learning Objective

Students will be able to describe the summer season and identify appropriate clothes for the season. They will also be able to list a number of summer-weather activities and compare their ideas with their classmates.

Introduction

The lesson begins by reviewing the four seasons and introducing the summer season. Then students read a summer poem and learn about the different summer holidays like Independence Day, Memorial Day, and Father’s Day.

Instruction

After learning about summer holidays, students discuss different summertime activities like taking a swim, going to an amusement park and eating ice cream. Then, have students vote on their favorite summer activity and use the bar chart for a visual representation of the results. Next, discuss the different clothing that is worn in the summer including flip flops, bathing suits, and shorts. After this, students drag images to complete patterns and then complete a summer word search. Next, students practice rhyming with summer words like “sun” and “fan.” Students will then learn about summer animals, fruits, and vegetables.

Quiz

Students respond to ten questions consisting of true or false and multiple-choice questions. Students choose the picture that best represents the summer season.

Closing

To conclude, students review what they learned and share their favorite thing about summer. Then they describe summer using the 5 senses. Ask students, “What do you see in the summer? What do you hear? What do you taste? etc.”
