General

In this lesson, students will learn strategies to help them read unfamiliar words. These strategies include using syllables, letter sounds, and context clues.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.3a
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.5.3a

Learning objective

Students will be able to use several strategies to decode an unfamiliar word.

Introduction

Students will start by reading a short passage about a dangerous adventure. They will pick out any unknown words. They will discuss some of these words on the slide, along with some strategies to figure out unknown words.

Instruction

Students will reflect that when they were starting to learn how to read, they learned the most common sounds of the letters of the alphabet and blended these sounds to create words. They will read and listen to the words, "preorder," "scarlet," "fir," and "urgently."

Students will also review the rules about syllables, including the vowel rule (the number of vowels can indicate the number of syllables in a word). They will practice counting the vowels in multisyllabic words, such as "incomprehensible." They will also discuss words with open and closed syllables, as well as, prefixes, suffixes, and root words. They will then go over the C-V-V-C rule and the C-le rule. After going over all these rules, they will sort words by the rule that would help divide them.

Students can also use context clues to read unknown words. They will read the passage from the introduction and look at the context of the unknown words.

Quiz

Review the lesson with 10 questions. Students will be asked to divide words, determine the number of syllables in a word, and use context clues to understand the meaning of an unknown word.

Closing

Students will recall the different strategies they learned in this lesson. Lastly, they will complete a decoding challenge with multisyllabic words.
