In this lesson, students will learn about context clues and how they can use them to find the meaning of unknown words. They will practice looking for synonyms, antonyms, definitions, or background knowledge to find the meaning of these unknown words.

Learning objective
Students will be able to use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.
Introduction
Students will look at pictures and share how the people in the pictures are feeling. They will be introduced to context clues and put magnifying glasses on unknown words.
Instruction
Students will also read the steps to become a context clue detective! Read until you come across a word you don't know. Stop. Re-read the sentence with the word you don't know. Look and search for hints around the word. Use your skills to come up with a meaning. Students will then use synonyms to find the meaning of unknown words, such as "sterilize" and "hilarious." They will read sentences and find the synonyms of the underlined sentences. They will also use antonyms to find the meaning of unknown words, like "petite." They will then read sentences and find the word that the underlined definitions describe.
Quiz
Students will review how to use sentence-level context clues to figure out what words mean.
Closing
Ask students to recall things to look for when they come across a word they don't know. Lastly, students will use context clues to describe a list of words.
