Introduction

The lesson begins with a table of contents that links to different activities. First, students learn about Read Across America Day. They discuss some of the books they’ve read and share some of the favorite books and characters.

Instruction

Students participate in a number of activities, including a rhyming board game. Students spin a wheel of words and must rhyme correctly to advance in the game. Next, students think about what they want to be when they grow up, a place they want to travel to, a person they would like to meet, and a goal they have, after reading “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” After this, have your students decorate a silly sock by dragging the items on the board or by using their own imaginations with the pencil tool. Finally, choose to read from three of Dr. Seuss’s stories presented in video/audiobook format.

Teaching tips

Read the story “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” before taking part in the activity on slide 5. The video/audiobook in the lesson provides great visuals for students. Before reading, you might ask students where they’ve traveled. Which cities? Countries? Etc. While reading, you may stop to go over different figures of speech in the text and ask students how they would feel if they were in the character’s shoes.

More information about the rhyming game can be found by clicking the ‘Information’ button in the top right corner. Feel free to adapt the rules of the game or modify the timer to better suit your students' needs.
