General
Students are introduced to the three main states of matter. They will then practice categorizing a list of items and determining whether they are solids, liquids, or gases.

Learning objective
Students will be able to plan an investigation to classify objects based on the properties of matter.
Introduction
Students discuss what they already know about observable properties with a classmate.
Instruction
Introduce the three main states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Go over each one and provide some examples. Explain that in solids, the molecules are packed tightly together. Ask students if they can provide some examples of their own. In a liquid, the molecules move around freely and take the shape of the container. Ask if students can think of some examples of liquids. Finally, molecules in gases are also loose and fit into any space. Have students provide some examples and then practice drawing 3 examples of each state of matter.
Students then look at a list of objects that need to be classified. With a partner, they will create categories for these items and then decide if they are solids, liquids, or gases.
Closing
Students reflect on the previous activity. Was it difficult? What questions do they still have?
