Learning Objective

Students will be able to develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach with guidance from peers.

Introduction

Students begin by discussing some introductory questions. Then explain what peer editing is and ask if students know any of the steps of peer editing.

Instruction

Introduce the three steps to peer editing: compliments, suggestions, and corrections. Begin by describing how you can give compliments and provide some sentence starters. Read the sample paragraph and have students list 3 compliments they can give about the writing example. Next, go over suggestions and explain what students should look out for. This includes word choice, details, and sentence structure. Read the sample paragraph and have students brainstorm one suggestion. Finally, explain the process of correcting, paying attention to spelling, grammar, punctuation, and run-on sentences. Read the paragraph and underline the spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. Remind students that they should remain positive and specific when giving feedback.

Quiz

Students respond to 10 true or false and multiple-choice questions.

Closing

Students will read a paragraph. Then they will list their compliments, suggestions, and corrections in a graphic organizer.
