General

Students will learn how to recognize the moral of the story by paying close attention to the actions of the characters, then analyzing the results of those actions. They will read the story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and determine the moral by analyzing the character’s decisions.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.2

Learning objective

Students will be able to recount stories, including fables, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

Introduction

Begin by asking students why we read and tell stories. Answers might include, “To be inspired,” “To hear about something that happened,” or “To learn from others.” Explain that when we learn an important lesson from a story, that is called the “moral.”

Instruction

Tell students that they can determine the moral of a story by paying attention to what the characters do and what happens as a result of their actions. They can also decide if the character made a good or bad decision. Show students the popular nursery rhyme, “Humpty Dumpty.” Can they find a moral? Next, read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” Ask students what happened to the boy when he finally saw the real wolf? Why did no one come to help him? Have students determine the moral. What do they think would have happened if the boy had listened to his parents? After this, students will read the sentences and decide if the character made a good or bad choice. For example, when the parents told the boy not to lie, that was a good choice. Ask students what they would have done differently if they were in the boy’s shoes.

Quiz

Students respond to ten questions. They will read the fable, “The Plane Tree” and answer questions to determine the moral of the story.

Closing

Students draw a picture to depict the moral of the story in “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” or any story they have read in class.
