When we think about our health and well-being, physical illnesses may come to mind first, but that is only one part of well-being. Mental health also plays an enormous role in how good we feel. That's because mental health is made up of parts of ourselves which aren't immediately obvious to us as something we have control over, such as our thoughts, emotions and behavior. By caring for our mental health, we gain a better understanding of how to put ourselves into a positive, growth mindset, ready to overcome the challenges we all inevitably will face.

Learning objective

Students will be able to understand what mental health is and basic ways to care for their mental health.


Many times in life, we will face unpleasant emotions such as fear, anxiety, and sadness. While these feelings are inevitable throughout the course of our life, the way that we respond to these negative feelings has a huge impact on our ability to manage and work through these unpleasant emotions in a way that is healthy and leads to growth. By caring for our mental health, we are better equipped to manage these emotions when faced with them.


Luckily, there are concrete actions we can take to improve our mental health, such as growing our awareness and mindfulness of the emotions we are experiencing, talking to others about how we feel, and taking care of our physical health through proper nutrition and rest. We should also remember that you never know what somebody else is going through, and so you should be kind to everybody to help them preserve their own mental health.


At the end of this lesson, students are asked to reflect:

- What are big feelings?
- What is mental health?
- Why is mental health important?
- What are our self care skills?
- How do you feel about sharing your feelings with friends or family?
