Standards

CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.8

Learning objective

Students will be able to identify the twenty, fifty, and one hundred dollar bills.

Introduction

Students will begin with a discussion on when they have shopped for more expensive items such as jewelry or athletic shoes. They learn that it is important to know which bills have the higher values.

Instruction

Students begin by learning about some of the features all paper money have in common such as having a person on the face, the year of issue, and a serial number. They are encouraged to look for these as they are shown pictures of the bills. Continuing on, students learn that Andrew Jackson is on the face of the twenty-dollar bill. They learn that Ulysses S. Grant is on the face of the fifty-dollar bill. They complete an activity sorting and counting these bills. Next, they see the one hundred dollar bill with Benjamin Franklin on the face. They practice sorting the 3 bills from least to greatest and greatest to least. Another practice requires them to read a short description of a bill, and then match it. A final practice has the student erasing to reveal the bills and then following a direction to match them to a geometric shape

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions

Closing

Students are shown 3 objects and the bills they have learned about. They match the objects to their possible price.
