In this lesson, students will learn about how the different aspects of geography; land, location, and climate affect the way people live. They will explore how geography affects what people do, how they dress, and even how they live

Learning objective

Students will be able to explain how the physical features and natural resources in different communities affect the people that live there

Introduction

Students will begin by reflecting on what they see outside and like to do in their own communities. They will jot down and share their ideas

Instruction

The lesson will review the terms geography, physical features, and natural resources. Students will watch a video to learn the different physical features of land such as hills, mountains, plains, forest areas. They will learn that natural resources and climate also contribute to how people live. Students will discuss how living in a desert, on an island, near the water, mountains, and plains affect people's way of life. They will then zoom in on their communities within New YorkState and discuss the geography and climate. Students will watch a video to understand the differences between urban, suburban, and rural communities within New York State. Then, they will discuss how people live in those communities.

Students will respond to 10 questions including 5 true/false and 5 multiple-choice.

Closing

Students will analyze images of the desert and discuss what they know about the geography. They will prepare and pack a suitcase to take a trip to the desert. After packing their suitcase, they will share the reason for each item and how it will help them survive in the dry, hot, sandy desert
