In this lesson, students will learn how all seven of the coordinating conjunctions are used sentences and the functions of them. They will learn the acronym, FANBOYS, to help them remember all the conjunctions. They will also do several activities practicing using and correcting conjunctions in sentences.

Learning objective

Students will be able to use conjunctions in sentences.

Students will look at two pictures of a character named Abby. In one, she is playing the recorder; in the other, she's playing video games. Students will tell a partner about the things Abby likes to do in one full sentence. Discuss with the class about the word(s) they used.

Students will discuss the seven coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) and learn the acronym FANBOYS. They will then read several sentences and find the conjunctions in each sentence. They will also read beginning phrases of sentences and use conjunctions to "glue" them to the ending phrases. Next, students will complete sentences with the correct conjunctions.

Review facts about conjunctions and answer multiple-choice questions completing sentences with the correct conjunctions.

Students will recall when to use conjunctions and why they are important. They will correct two sentences written with the conjunctions.
