Students will learn about different types of context clues including definition, synonym, antonym/opposites, examples/description, and inferences. They will view examples of each. They will use these clues to figure out the meanings of words as they are used in a sentence.

Learning Objective
Students will be able to assess a sentence to figure out the type of context clue being used and unlock the meaning of a word.
Introduction
Students begin the lesson by reviewing word connotations. They'll decide whether a word sounds like a positive word or a negative one and explain their thinking.
Instruction
Students will identify the type of context clue being used in a passage and then figure out what the word means. Following this, students will read a sentence with an unknown word. They will have to drag to replace that word with a similar one. Next, they will read a sentence with a missing word and they will have to fill in the blank. Finally, students will read a longer passage about the dangers of youth football. They will highlight the context clues and define the unknown words.
Quiz
Students will identify the type of context clue presented and then choose the best definitions for words. Finally, they will choose the best word to fill in the blank in a sentence.
Closing
Students will end the lesson by writing a sentence using one of the class's vocabulary words. Their sentence must contain 7 or more words and it must contain a context clue. Afterward, a partner will read their sentence and decide on the type of context clue written.
Teaching tips
When students try to define a word or fill in a blank, have them plug their guess into the sentence and see if it still makes sense. The closing activity encourages students to write longer, more detailed sentences.
