Have students discuss with a partner what their strategy is when they come across a word or phrase they don't know in a text. Show one of the possible responses and discuss what students came up with in their pairs.
Introduce the idea of context clues to the students. Make sure that they understand what context clues are and that context talks about where and what is around the unfamiliar word/phrase. Tell students that when they don't know what a word is, that they can look for helping words and definition clues. Explain to students how to find and use the helping words, and then have them check their understanding of helping words by dragging the correct words to the text given on the interactive whiteboard. Repeat this and ask students how they know where each word belongs. Repeat this with an explanation of definition clues, and have them check their understanding of definition clues as well. Next, give students two segments of text in which they are asked to determine the meaning of a specific word. Have students explain which context clue they used to help determine the meaning.
Students are asked to complete multiple-choice questions in which they fill in the missing word from the sentence. They must use context clues of the sentence to determine which word is correct in the sentence. They are then asked to give a definition for the word given in bold in the sentence.
Remind students that determining the meaning of words and phrases using context clues can help them not feel frustrated while reading and can help them become better readers. Close the lesson by having students work in pairs as reading detectives. Start the timer and have students read the text from the interactive whiteboard and determine the meaning of the words given in bold. Discuss their definitions as a class and ask which context clues they used to determine the meaning.
