In this lesson, students will learn the difference between a consumer and producer. Students will analyze videos and photographs and describe consumer and producer examples within the school and community.

Learning objective

Students will be able to describe consumers and producers.


Students will be asked to make a list of 3 items their families like to buy and explain the importance of the items. The introduction will review the definition of goods and services and provide examples.


The lesson will explain that producers are people who make goods or provide services and consumers are people who buy services and goods. The students will watch videos and discuss examples of producers and consumers with their partners. The students will analyze several photographs that show a producer and consumer in a school and community setting. They will circle the producers and analyze the consumers and explain what they see happening.


Students will respond to 10 questions including 6true/false and 4 multiple-choice.


Students will look at more examples and complete a drag and drop activity to show their understanding of consumers and producers. Then, they will spin the wheel to write about a time they have been a consumer or producer and draw a picture to go along with their writing.

Teaching tips

Create an anchor chart that includes examples of producers and consumers discussed throughout the lesson. Have the terms goods, services, producers, and consumers on a vocabulary word wall or student word list for student reference.
