General

Students learn to compare and contrast important points presented by two texts on the same topic.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.9

Learning objective

Students will be able to identify similarities and differences between two texts with similar topics.

Introduction

Ask students to discuss the similarities and differences between the two images presented on the interactive whiteboard. Discuss the terms "compare" and "contrast." Being able to see the similarities and differences allows you to make meaningful comparisons between texts.

Instruction

Discuss the given lists of comparing and contrasting words with the students. Can they use them in a sentence? Do they know any others? Read the set of texts together as a class. Decide if the given statements about the texts are comparisons or contrasting information. As a class, read the second set of texts and ask students to work in pairs to answer the questions about the text. Check answers as a class. A final set of texts is given and you may ask students to work in pairs or individually to decide what the similarities and differences are between the texts.

Quiz

Students are given ten questions. These questions check their understanding of key concepts given in the lesson and ask students to find similarities and differences between given texts.

!---Closing
Discuss with students the importance of being able to compare and contrast texts. They are able to organize and remember information, as well as learning to distinguish between given information. To close, have students form pairs or groups and give them two books on the same topic. Have the students analyze the book (or part of the book) and share their comparisons with the class.

Instruction materials

Pairs of different books with the same topic. Either 1 set per pair of students, or 1 set per group.
