This lesson goes over comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs. It will explain when and why they are used. Students will complete activities to determine which comparatives and superlatives should be used.
Students will be able to identify and correctly use comparative and superlative adverbs and adjectives.
Students will look at a winter scene with different sized trees, reindeer, snowmen, and snowflakes. They will use words to describe what they see. Next, they will review adjectives, words that describe nouns. They will look at an image of apples with words on them and identify the apples with adjectives. They will also review adverbs by sorting adverbs by what they tell (e.g., how, when, where).
Tell students comparatives are used to show the difference between two objects. They will see how "short" and "shorter" can describe two people. They will also see to add "more" before words with two or more syllables, such as "more slowly."
Introduce superlatives as words that are used to show the difference between more than two objects. They will look at groups of examples, such as "hot-hotter-hottest" and circle the superlative in each group. They will also see that "most" needs to come before words with two or more syllables.
Students will take a look at the comparative and superlative forms of words, such as "brave-braver-bravest." Next, they will name the comparative and superlative forms of words. They will also read sentences with comparative or superlatives and determine what the word is. They will complete sentences with comparatives or superlatives.
Students are given 10 exercises in which they review comparative and superlatives by completing sentences with the correct words.
Have students recall what comparative and superlatives are, as well as when to use them. Students will work in pairs to come up with as many comparative and superlative statements related to the classroom as they can.
