General

Students will learn what camouflage is and the different forms of camouflage animals use. They will learn about how camouflage can be used to protect prey from predators as well as a strategy for hunting. They will do a prey/predator sort and look at different pictures and identify the animal that is using camouflage. The lesson includes several engaging videos where students try to find the camouflaged animal and ends with a fun activity!

Standards

NGSS:
3-LS4-2

Learning Objective

Students will be able to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.

Introduction

The lesson begins with a class discussion on the game of hide and seek. Students will share what the goal of the game is and what makes for the best hiding spots. Explain that camouflage is important for some animals’ survival.

Instruction

Explain that animals use their body color, body shape, and skin pattern to blend into their environment. Have students observe the pictures of the camouflaged animals and try to find the hidden animals. Click on the covers to reveal the answers and click on the link to watch the video where students can continue challenging themselves to find hidden animals. Explain that some animals use camouflage for protection against prey, while others use it for hunting purposes. Have students match the prey to the predator by drawing a line. Look at the different habitats. Which animals might you find using camouflage in these environments? After this, watch the video and answer the discussion questions.

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true or false questions.

Closing

Camouflage your own butterfly! Students will cut out and color a butterfly to camouflage it somewhere in the classroom. You may use the printable worksheet provided for this activity.
