In this lesson, students learn how to identify and name feelings. They will practice using a feeling word list and they will reflect on the importance of communicating our feelings to help ourselves and others.

Learning objective

Students will be able to name feelings and explain the importance of understanding emotions.


Ask students to share what they know about feelings. How are they feeling today so far?


Explain what feelings or emotions are and see if students can give any examples of some. Clarify that our feelings are different than our physical feelings like ‘cold’ and ‘hungry’ and that everyone has feelings. Go over the list of feeling words then have students read each sentence and fill in the blank with one of the feeling words. Explain how we can name feelings by observing how others look and behave. Discuss why naming our feelings is important. It allows others to help us and allows us to know what we need. It also helps us better understand and assist others.


Students respond to 9 discussion questions in which they observe an image and name the most appropriate feeling. How did they get to their answer?


Go to the feeling word list and have students take turns acting out each word for 15 seconds. The rest of the class tries to guess which word was chosen. Make use of any of our various tools for this activity, like our timers and our name picker!
