In this lesson, students will learn how to use word and picture clues to figure out unknown words. They will do a series of activities to practice these skills.

Introduction

Students will match words to their corresponding pictures. Have students discuss times they have come across unknown words. Read the example, "Joe was upset when he saw he damaged the plate. Students will try to figure out what the word, "damaged," means and discuss the clues they use to help them. Explain why it is important to know how to figure out the meaning of unknown words.

Instruction

Students will read a caption accompanied by a picture of a boy on an Easter egg hunt and use clues to figure out unknown words. Explain how students can use word clues and picture clues to help them figure out the meanings of unknown words. Students will read sentences with pictures and fill in the blanks with the correct words.

Read a short passage to students and fill out a graphic organizer about the words they know, words they want to know, and the questions they have about the passage. They will several other activities to practice figuring out unknown words.

Quiz

Students will respond to ten questions in which they define unknown words and identify specific words from a text.

Closing

Students will recall:
- What is one way to learn the meaning of a word?
- Why is it important to figure out unknown words?

Students will listen to a passage about Reece and a cactus. Students will discuss what the underlined word, "spiky," means using the help of word and picture clues. Lastly, they will listen to a passage about a dog with a broken arm and answer questions.
