Teach your students how to improve their writing with “ARMS and CUPS.” The lesson includes a printable checklist that students can use. They first check for additional words/sentences and substituting words/sentences for others. Then they check for capitalization, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Learning Objective

Students will be able to revise and edit their writing by using the ARMS and CUPS checklists.

Introduction

Students begin by reviewing the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Explain the importance of revising and editing before introducing ARMS and CUPS.

Instruction

Introduce the acronym ARMS. Then show students two sentences and have them work together to use ARMS to revise the sentences. Next, introduce the acronym CUPS and give students the opportunity to practice with the two sentences on the whiteboard. After this, students are presented with a longer passage and they should rewrite the passage using ARMS and CUPS to revise and edit.

Quiz

Students respond to true or false questions as well as multiple-choice questions. They will read a sentence and choose the best way to strengthen and revise that sentence. They will also choose which sentence is written correctly.

Closing

Students use the spinner and quickly write about the topic they land on. Then they will switch papers with a partner who will check their writing and use ARMS and CUPS to suggest improvements.
