In this lesson, students learn all about analog clocks and how to utilize them to tell time to the half-hour. The lesson includes an interactive video about telling time to the half-hour. Students will practice recognizing and acknowledging that when the long hand on the clock points to the 6, this means 30 minutes have gone by. In addition, they will be introduced to the concept of “half past,” and will learn how to use this phrase correctly.

Introduce students to the concept of half an hour by explaining that 30 is half of 60, so 30 minutes is half an hour. Then, have students watch the interactive video to learn more about telling time to the half-hour using analog clocks.
Explain that when the long hand points to the 6, this means that 30 minutes have gone by. Show students several examples, and the steps they should take to properly read and write time. Guide students in completing activities such as displaying the time in which they will meet with their friends at an amusement park on an adjustable clock, and helping Mr. Parrot read various times on his clocks. Then, introduce the phrase “half past,” and have students practice reading the time on different clocks and determining the time using the newly learned phrase. Have students work in pairs to take turns reading the time on an interactive clock tool.
