General

Students learn to calculate with ratio tables with multiples of one hundred.

Standards

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RPA.3.A

Learning objective

Students will be able to solve ratio tables with hundreds.

Introduction

Practice working with multiples of hundreds using the MAB blocks of 100 on the interactive whiteboard.

Instruction

Start by explaining how ratio tables work and how they are built using the example of one hundred milk cartons in each box. Then ask students to try one on their own. Explain the next exercise in which an intermediate step is skipped and how you solve that in your head. Then ask students to practice another exercise. Next discuss how to determine how many groups are required in a ratio table if you know how many are in the group. Ask students to practice with an example. To finish, have students solve all kinds of tables individually or in pairs.

Check that students are able to solve ratio tables with multiples of one hundred by asking the following questions:
- What do you write in the bottom row of the ratio table?
- What kind of problem do you make if you want to determine the number of groups and you know how many are in 1 group?

Quiz

Students are given a set of ten problems in which they are asked to complete and solve ratio tables, some with intermediate steps skipped, and others with a gradual buildup of the ratio table.

Closing

Remind students of the importance of solving ratio tables with multiples of one hundred. To close the lesson, ask students to create a ratio table with multiples of hundreds numbers that is not complete. Have them swap tables with a neighbor and to complete the ratio table. When completed, they can return the table and explain their strategy.

Teaching tips

Students who have difficulty with this learning goal can be supported with the use of manipulatives to help visualize the ratio table.

Instruction materials
