In this lesson, students will learn why it is important to avoid plagiarism. They will identify plagiarism and correct it.

Learning objective

Students will be able to avoid plagiarism by quoting sources and citing ideas.

Introduction

Students will attempt to define plagiarism in their own words and then discuss whether a given paraphrasing of material is plagiarism.

Instruction

Students will learn what plagiarism is, how to identify it, and best practices and strategies to avoid it (including how to properly quote and paraphrase). Students will engage in activities to test their understanding that include: identifying plagiarization of direct quotes/words, identifying plagiarization of ideas, correcting plagiarization by quoting, and correcting plagiarization by citing ideas.
