General

This lesson focuses on identifying and using the cardinal directions, north, south, east, and west to locate objects and give directions.

Learning objective

Students will be able to use a compass rose to identify cardinal directions on a map.

Introduction

Students will identify if an object is left or right, up or down.

Instruction

Students will learn how mapping tools, like cardinal directions, can help us navigate from one place to the next, provide directions, or trace important routes. They will then look at a compass rose and a labeled diagram. Have students discuss what they think N, S, E, and W might stand for. Tell students that North, South, East, and West are called cardinal directions.

Students will look at a compass rose that has an animal for each direction and drag the animal to the matching cardinal direction word. Students will use cardinal directions to describe locations of objects in the classroom (e.g., desks, bookcases).

Discuss with students how to draw an aerial view of a map. Students will draw what they would see on their desks if they were "flies on the ceiling." Then they will label the objects on their map. Students will also look at a map of a classroom that uses symbols to represent objects (i.e., circle = chair, square = desk) and answer questions about it. Students will use a compass rose to answer questions about a map. Lastly, they will label a compass rose.

Quiz

Students will answer 8 multiple-choice questions pertaining to an image of a compass rose with animals in each cardinal direction. They will decide the direction in which each animal is placed. They will also answer 2 true/false questions about compass roses.

Closing

Students can take part in a cardinal direction scavenger hunt. One student will wait outside while another student hides an object in the classroom. When the student gets back into the classroom, the class must direct the student to the object using only cardinal directions.

Students can also play a cardinal directions game with a partner. They will help their partners travel from one point in the classroom to another point. They will use a map and give cardinal directions to their partners.
