In this lesson, students will learn the strategy "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then." They will read several passages and use the strategy to summarize the stories.

Students will be able to summarize a story with only the important information.
Introduction
Students will be introduced to the story structure, including Character Introduction, Rising Action, Problem (Climax), Falling action, and Conclusion. Students can use the same structure to summarize a story. Explain why it is important to be able to summarize stories.
Instruction
Students will see what each part of the ""Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" strategy means. They will read a short story and summarize it using the 5 parts in the strategy. Students will check their answers.
Next, they will read a story about a boy named Andrew's first day at a new school and answer questions about it. They will also read a story about a character named Charlotte who visits her grandparents for a summer.
Quiz
Students will answer ten questions which review key terminology and ask them to apply their knowledge to a given text.
Closing
Students will recall:
- How do you summarize a story?
- What is important to remember?
Students will then think of a story and tell a partner a summarized version of it.
