Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.2e

Learning objective

Students will be able to spell high-frequency words with suffixes using rules 1, 2, and 3.

Introduction

Start by asking students to identify the prefix and base word of the words given. What is a prefix? And a base word?

Instruction

Introduce students to the term suffix- a word that is placed at the end of a base word. Tell students that there are common suffixes that they are already familiar with. When you add a suffix to a base word, you change the meaning of that word. As you start spelling you will come across some words often- they are high-frequency words. There are six most common suffix spelling rules and this lesson will teach rules 1, 2, and 3. Discuss with students some tips on how to understand words with a suffix. Tell students that you will first introduce the rule, then practice with the rule and then move on to the next rule. Rule 1 is that when a word ends in a silent 'e', drop the 'e' if the suffix begins with a vowel. Show a set of examples and then have students practice with the words given. Have students read the words, then add the suffix to make a new word. Rule 2 is that when a word ends in a silent 'e' keep the 'e' if the suffix starts with a consonant. Show a set of examples and then have students practice with the words given. Ask students to circle the correct suffix for the bold words in the sentences. Rule 3 is that when a word ends in -ce or -ge you keep the 'e' if the suffix begins with 'a' or 'o'. Show a set of examples and then have students practice with the words given. Have students create new words on the apples by deciding if the root word gets -able or -ous. Check the learning of students by showing them a word in a sentence and asking them to decide which suffix it gets, how to correctly spell the word, and which rule they are applying to the word. Then have students practice applying the rules to the sets of words.

Quiz

Students are given ten questions in which they must determine the correct spelling of a given word and suffix. They must apply rules 1, 2, and 3 to determine what the correct spelling of the word is as well as questions about the rules themselves.

Closing

Remind students that these rules help to spell high-frequency words and are the words you see and use often. Close by spinning the dial and getting a suffix. Have students determine which base word can be attached to the suffix and how to spell the whole word.
