General

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.K.9

Learning objective

Students will be able to read two texts on the same topic and determine the similarities and differences between the two.

Introduction

Start with a game in which students must spot the 5 differences between the two presented images. (Note- they are very specific small differences.) Introduce students to the terms similar and different, and that they are the same as compare and contrast. Tell students that you can have two texts with the same topic, but they can tell different information.

Instruction

Read the two texts as a class. Have students try to keep any similarities and differences in mind and then ask students to decide if the listed sentences are similarities or differences. Repeat this with a second set of texts and ask students to answer the multiple-choice questions in pairs. With the third set of texts, ask students to say what some of the similarities and differences in the text are. With the last two sets of texts, you may choose to have students work in groups, pairs or individually to determine the similarities and differences.

Quiz

Students are first given a set of ten questions. These questions check their understanding of key concepts given in the lesson and ask students to read two texts and answer questions about them.

Closing

Remind students that they can now identify similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic. They can use this when they are looking for information and in their daily lives. Close the lesson by having students work in groups or pairs and analyze two classroom books on the same topic. Have them discuss the questions from the interactive whiteboard. You might choose to help students choose the two books.
