General

In this lesson, students will learn how pictures and text in informational texts are related. They will do several activities, including determining which picture matches the given text, drawing a picture to match the text, and writing a short caption about a picture.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.K.7

Learning objective

Students will be able to describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear.

Introduction

Students will answer riddles about animals. One example is "My neck is long and I eat leaves from trees. Who am I?" Explain that pictures and words in a text are related. The riddles and pictures match.

Instruction

Explain that the pictures and the words have to match. Students will look at two pictures, one of some scuba divers and another of a forest, and determine which picture matches the text. They will the same activity with pictures of a squirrel and rabbits. Next, they will draw a picture to match the text, "Starfish and jellyfish are sea animals. They both live underwater." They will also look at a picture of a pedestrian sign and describe what they see. Then, they will look at a picture and read a short passage titled, "How to Build a Snowman," and answer questions about the characters, setting, and key details. Students will read a passage about camels and circle details they learned from the story and picture. They will also look at an illustration of a zoo and read a short paragraph about it.

Quiz

Students will answer ten questions in which they need to read text and select images that match and vice versa.

Closing

Students will recall what they learned in this lesson:
- Should the pictures and text in a story match?
- What can you learn about the story when you look at the pictures?

Students will create a story about a picture of a soccer game. They will complete an "exit slip" and draw a picture to match the text.
