General

In this lesson, students will learn to recognize irrelevant evidence to a claim and replace it with relevant evidence.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.8.8

Learning objective

Students will be able to recognize when evidence is irrelevant to a claim.

Introduction

Students will sort statements as claims and evidence. Discuss why it is important to recognize whether evidence is irrelevant to a claim.

Instruction

Tell students how to recognize irrelevant evidence by asking, "Does this prove the claim?" If the statement does not, then it is not relevant.

Students will read a claim with relevant evidence and a claim with irrelevant evidence. They will read three passages and highlight the piece of irrelevant evidence in each passage.

Next, students will read a passage about performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). They will also add some relevant evidence to a claim. Then, they will choose evidence that is relevant to the claim, "Kids should spend a lot of their spare time reading books."

Quiz

Students will respond to ten questions in which they determine if the evidence given is relevant, and are asked to determine which evidence is relevant to a given claim.

Closing

Students will recall:
- What question can you ask yourself to know if evidence is irrelevant
- Why is it important to identify irrelevant evidence? What effect will it have on a claim?
