General

In this lesson, students will learn about the three classifications of matter into elements, mixtures, and compounds.

Standards

NGSS: MS-PS1-5

Learning objective

Students will be able to describe the different properties of elements, compounds, and mixtures.

Introduction

Students will work in pairs to complete a brainstorm map of the different characteristics (that they can think of) relating to mixtures, compounds, and elements.

Instruction

Students will learn the properties and examples of each type. Including subcategories (solutions, metalloids, suspensions, colloids). Practice questions will be embedded within each lesson. Toward the end, students will classify several substances. They will also connect this lesson to the classroom and real-world by identifying mixtures, compounds, and elements around them

Quiz

Review elements, compounds, and mixtures with 10 multiple-choice questions.

Closing

Students will revisit their original brainstorm maps and revise to reflect their updated understanding of the three types of matter.
