General

Conjunctions allow us to join sentences, and being able to do this grammatically is important for communicating complex ideas. This lesson focuses on the two most common types of conjunctions in English: coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions.

Understanding the difference between these two conjunctions depends on understanding the concept of an independent vs. dependent clause. It will be helpful for students to have this knowledge prior to the lesson.

Standards

Learning objective

Explain that subordinating conjunctions when combining an independent clause and a dependent clause, such as, "Jane got ready quickly because she overslept." Show some examples of subordinating conjunctions, including although, because, while, and until.

Next, students will read several sentences and circle the conjunctions. They will then specify whether those conjunctions are coordinating or subordinating. They will also complete sentences by dragging conjunctions to the blanks and tell whether they are coordinating or subordinating.
