In this lesson, students will learn where to use quotation marks and commas to denote speech and text.

Learning objective

Students will be able to use quotation marks and commas to mark quotes.

Introduction

Students will consider and then review the purpose of quotation marks. They will go through a review activity utilizing commas and quotations marks to punctuate a conversation/dialogue.

Instruction

Students will learn when they should use quotation marks (citing the exact words of text/speech of a person) and where to place punctuation when citing speech/text. Students will engage in activities to test their understanding that include: putting commas in the right places, adding quotation marks and commas to quotes, and correcting more challenging sentences,

Quiz

Review lesson concepts with 12 questions. Students will decide where to put punctuation.

Closing

With a partner, students will brainstorm common things people in their life tell them. They will then put those in quote form.
