General

In this lesson, students will practice determining time difference and elapsed time using analog clocks to the nearest minute. Students will be given the skills to find the time that has passed between two events. They will watch a video about elapsed time with analog clocks and how to utilize the “mountain method” to solve time problems. Then, students will complete several activities in which they practice solving elapsed time word problems using this strategy.

Learning Objective

Students will be able to properly tell what the difference is between two analog clocks to the nearest minute and determine how long a time is between them.

Introduction

Students will review the concept of elapsed time and solve an elapsed time word problem with their classmates. Then, students will fill in the “what you know” and “what you want to know” about elapsed time in a K-W-L chart.

Instruction

The lesson will begin with an explanation of elapsed time and a video explaining how to utilize a strategy known as the “mountain method” to aid in solving elapsed time problems. Guide students in completing a word problem and explain that mountains represent 1 hour, hills represent 1, 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes, and rocks represent 1-minute increments. Then, have students practice on their own with several problems. Activities include determining how long Joey was at the movie theaters given the start as well as end time and completing a table by filling in the elapsed times. In addition, students adjust analog clocks to reflect the correct start and end times, then determine the elapsed time between the two.

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice questions. They will read two different analog clocks and practice determining the correct elapsed time.

Closing

Students will imagine it is their perfect winter day and write 3 of their favorite winter activities. For each, they will adjust clocks to reflect the start and end time of those activities. Lastly, students will calculate the elapsed time for each.
