Standards

CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.D.10

Learning objective

Students will be able to read a picture graph.

Introduction

Students begin by reading a statement about a girl’s pets. The students discuss that there are many unanswered questions such as what does the pet look like, etc. A picture is then revealed to show more information about the statement. Students discuss how pictures can be helpful to quickly provide a visual.

Instruction

Students are introduced to the parts of a picture graph such as the title, keys, and labels. They complete an exercise that requires them to give thumbs up or down if the labels match the title. Next, they work with labels by circling correct labels for a topic and crossing out the wrong ones. This is followed by applying graph reading skills on several picture graphs. Questions include finding the parts of the graphs and using math to compare numbers that are greater than and less than. They also work with combining numbers and adding up the total of the graphs.

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.

Closing

Students will complete a graph by reading clues and dragging the correct amount of symbols.
