In this lesson, students will learn about Earth’s 5 major oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. Students will analyze photographs and videos, make observations, and take notes about specific features of each ocean, such as their size, temperatures, and wildlife.

Learning objective

Introduction
Students will fill out the first two columns of a KWL chart to show what they know and want to know about the oceans. Then, they will share their thinking.
Instruction
This lesson will remind the students of the 5 oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, the Indian, the Arctic, and the Southern. It will touch upon several reasons why the ocean is important to humans and other living things. Students will practice locating the oceans on the map and describing their location, in relation to bodies of land, using a compass. Students will gather notes about the ocean based on the provided descriptions of each ocean. They will explore and observe different videos that give facts and reveal important features and describe what life is like in these oceans. They will answer questions and discuss with partners to demonstrate their understanding of what they have learned.

Closing
Students will complete their KWL chart by writing at least 3 things they have learned about the ocean. Then, they will share their ideas with the class.
Teaching tips
Allow students to take notes in the note catcher during the lesson. You may also chart some of the students’ wonderings from their KWL prior to beginning the instruction. This way, it can be addressed if their questions have been answered during the lesson.
