General

In this lesson, students will learn all about analog clocks. They will learn how to tell and write time in hours using analog clocks. Students will learn how they work and learn to differentiate between the short hand and the long hand, completing several activities to test their understanding of the concepts. Students will watch a video all about telling time to the hour and will take turns with their classmates reading the time on a clock.

Standards

Learning Objective

Students will learn how to properly tell and write time in hours using analog clocks.

Introduction

Introduce students to the concept of telling time by showing them various pictures of clocks. Have students drag a star on the clocks that look similar to ones they have seen around their house.

Instruction

Begin the lesson by having students analyze an analog clock. Provide them with information that will help them differentiate the short hand and the long hand. Explain to students that when the hour hand is pointing at one of the hour numbers, we call this “o’clock.” Reiterate this concept to students by having them watch a video in which they learn all about analog clocks and telling time to the hour. Have students practice through various activities including reading a clock to determine the correct time, matching the times to the correct clocks, helping imaginary characters read and set the time, and taking turns with their classmates reading the time on an adjustable analog clock tool.

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice questions. They will be asked to look at an analog clock and choose the correct, corresponding time.

Closing

Students will partner with a classmate and spin the wheel to reveal different clocks, each showing a different time. Depending on which clock the wheel lands on, they will write the time to the hour using both numbers and words.
