General

In this lesson, students will be introduced to global warming and the effects that it has on the environment. Students will be able to define global warming and identify its characteristics. Students will learn that global warming is attributed to human causes, primarily the release of specific gases into the atmosphere, known as greenhouse gases. The lesson will focus on the greenhouse effect, where greenhouse gases come from, the causes and effects of global warming, and introduce students to different methods they can use to slow down the effects of global warming. Students will watch a video about climate change and read about different ways to save the Earth from climate change. They will then come up with 3 additional ways they can help save the future of the planet. The lesson will conclude with students completing a web diagram in which they will list 6 effects that global warming has had on the planet. Finally, they will discuss how they think this will affect the future of our planet.

Standards

Learning Objective

Students will be able to define global warming and understand how it works. They will also be able to identify what causes it, the impact that humans have on it, and the negative effects that it has on the environment. In addition, they will be able to understand several ways they can potentially mitigate the effects to help protect the future of our planet.

Introduction

Introduce students to what global warming is by providing them with a general definition. Ask students what they remember hearing or reading about global warming in the news or in articles. Then, slide to reveal examples of the news they may have heard surrounding the topic of global warming. Continue on by explaining to students that global warming poses many negative effects. Have them watch a video discussing various aspects of climate change and its effects on the planet. Instruct students to discuss why they believe it is important to learn about such topics.

Instruction

Begin by discussing global warming and how many scientists have attributed the recent increase in global temperatures to human causes, primarily the release of specific gases into our atmosphere caused by industrial activity. Teach students about the various greenhouse gases, and the process of the greenhouse effect. Explain where these greenhouse gases are coming from, and how human activity has a play in the process. Show students how we can slow down global warming by reading the linked article. Once they have finished, they will come up with 3 additional ways to help save the future of our planet.

Quiz

Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.

Closing

Students will use a graphic organizer to list 6 effects that global warming has had on the environment. Have students discuss how they think this will affect the future of our planet.
